Paediatric Neurology and Neurodevelopment

At our Paediatric Neurology Department, we are dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment and long-term management of disorders affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves and muscles in children—from newborns to adolescents. With a compassionate team and cutting-edge neuroscientific technology, we provide personalised treatment plans designed to ensure every child receives the expert care they deserve.

Our Specialised Services include:

Diagnostic Work Up

  • Electroencephalogram (EEG)

Routine and Sleep-Deprived EEG: Records the brain's electrical activity to detect abnormal patterns associated with epilepsy, seizures and other neurological conditions.

Video-EEG Monitoring: Continuous, long-term monitoring to capture and analyse seizure events for precise diagnosis and localisation.

  • Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) and Electromyography (EMG)

Evaluates the function of peripheral nerves and muscles to diagnose neuromuscular disorders such as peripheral neuropathy, muscular dystrophy and myasthenia gravis.

  • Neuroimaging

Dedicated Paediatric Brain CT and MRI: High-resolution scans tailored for children to assess brain structure, identify tumours, congenital malformations, stroke or signs of infection.

Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS): Advanced imaging to analyse the chemical composition of brain tissue, aiding in the diagnosis of metabolic disorders.

  • Genetic and Metabolic Testing

Comprehensive blood and CSF (Cerebrospinal Fluid) analysis to identify underlying genetic syndromes and inborn errors of metabolism that affect neurological function.

Interventional and Advanced Management

  • Intrathecal Baclofen Pump Management

Surgical placement and management of a device that delivers muscle relaxant medication (Baclofen) directly into the spinal fluid to control severe spasticity in conditions like Cerebral Palsy.

  • Vagal Nerve Stimulation (VNS)

Implantation and programming of a device that sends electrical pulses to the brain via the vagus nerve, used as an adjunctive therapy for drug-resistant epilepsy.

  • Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) Assessment

Evaluation for this surgical treatment, which involves implanting electrodes in specific brain areas to manage certain movement disorders in older children and teens.

  • Neuro-Rehabilitation Planning

Creation of integrated plans incorporating physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech and language therapy following stroke, brain injury or for long-term conditions like Cerebral Palsy.

Medical Management and Specialised Clinics

  • Epilepsy and Seizure Disorders

We manage all types of epilepsy, from common forms to rare and complex syndromes. Our approach includes:

Antiepileptic Drug (AED) Optimisation: Individualised drug regimens to achieve seizure freedom with minimal side effects.

Dietary Therapies: Management of the Ketogenic Diet, Modified Atkins Diet and Low Glycaemic Index Treatment for refractory epilepsy.

  • Neurodevelopmental Disorders

Comprehensive care for conditions affecting a child's development, including:

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD): Integrated management focusing on co-occurring neurological issues, such as anxiety or seizures.

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): Medical and behavioural interventions.

Learning Disabilities and Global Developmental Delay.

  • Movement Disorders

Diagnosis and treatment of conditions causing involuntary movements, such as Dystonia, Tremors and Tics/Tourette Syndrome.

  • Headache and Migraine Clinic

Specialised diagnosis and management of chronic or debilitating headaches and migraines in children and adolescents, including acute treatment and long-term prophylactic strategies.

  • Neuromuscular Disorders

Care for progressive muscle weakness and loss of function, including Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), Muscular Dystrophies and Myasthenia Gravis. Treatment may involve novel gene therapies and supportive care.

  • Neuro-Oncology and Neurofibromatosis

In collaboration with oncology, we manage the neurological complications of brain and spinal cord tumours and provide specialised surveillance for Neurofibromatosis and other neurocutaneous syndromes.

  • Cerebral Palsy and Spasticity Management

A multidisciplinary programme for managing the motor and associated neurological impairments of Cerebral Palsy, including medication, Botox injections for focal spasticity and rehabilitation planning.

  • Autoimmune and Inflammatory CNS Disorders

Diagnosis and treatment of conditions where the immune system attacks the central nervous system, such as Multiple Sclerosis and Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis (ADEM).

  • Stroke and Vascular Neurology

Rapid diagnosis and management of paediatric stroke, focusing on acute intervention and long-term recovery and prevention.

  • Sleep Disorders

Assessment and management of neurologically-related sleep issues, including narcolepsy, restless legs syndrome and complex parasomnias.
